Walking the world one step at a time

Our 2017 Travel Bucketlist – Through Europe and Beyond

I’m abnormal. I plan trips for years to come. Example A: In 2018, I’m going to Iceland. Yea… I know it’s a long way away, but it keeps me motivated! To help narrow down where we really want to go in 2017 I decided to put together our ultimate bucket-list inspired by fellow travel bloggers that we shamelessly follow.

Are any of these places on your bucketlist? If not, what’s on your bucketlist?

UK and Ireland Weekend Breaks

Stunning views of Benbulben to accompany our Harvest Feast on the #sligofoodtrail

A post shared by Sidewalk Safari (@drj_sidewalksafari) on

An easy 3-hour train ride from Dublin city we are dying to try out Sligo’s popping food scene. Sidewalk Safari had us drooling over the fantastic food choices in her post on the Sligo Food trail.

South West Cornwall

Would you believe me if I told you this was in England?! Beautiful blue ocean views from The Minack Theatre in Penzance.

A post shared by Eppie 🇬🇧 ✈️ 🌍 (@eppie_s) on

Only a few times in my life have I ever been so enamored with a place that I immediately started looking up places to stay when I booked my trip to visit. Eppie’s post on South West Cornwall did exactly that and I can’t stop thinking about this picture-perfect place.

The 2017 TBEX Europe conference is in Killarney and I cannot wait to make my way down to this beautiful part of Ireland. I love Rachel In Ireland’s post on Dingle and this picturesque corner of the world.

European City Breaks

Ah, Budapest. I’ve been dreaming of the thermal baths, the goulash, and the gorgeous Danube river view. The Longest Haul’s post on visiting Budapest in the winter convinced us to book tickets to this gorgeous city in January.

The Alhambra has always been a distant dream since we lived in America. Now that we’re so close it has quickly made it to the top of our bucket-list. Plus – HilaryStyle’s pictures sold me on making this a priority for a visit in 2017.

Enjoying the last sunny days in Berlin ✨#visit_berlin #germanytourism

A post shared by Olga Rabo (@therussianabroad) on

Berlin is one of my favorite cities in Europe. But, the hubs has never been so Berlin has made it to the short list! I love reading The Russian Abroad’s posts on Berlin and her food journey through the city is one of my favorites!

Carcassonne is actually kind of ridiculous, I mean really 👀

A post shared by Becky (@adventuringbec) on

I first heard of Carcassonne through Different Shores Blog and #FarawayFiles and was enamored by the beauty of this quaint little town. I couldn’t resist digging up a few more blogs and was quickly convinced by Accooohtrements that Carcassonne was a must-see in France.

Week-Long Trips

Florence and the Cinque Terre

I don't think I'll ever get tired of looking at photos of #CinqueTerre 😍 Where is the most photogenic place you've ever been?

A post shared by Dan James -Travel Photographer (@danflyingsolo) on

Spoiler alert: We’ve never been to Italy. When I asked my husband where he wanted to go for our 5-year anniversary next year he immediately said Italy. So… we’re headed to Florence, the Cinque Terre, and the small town of Camogli (thanks to Dan Flying Solo’s awesome account of this hidden village) in the spring of next year!

The Azores

Earlier this year we went hiking with Walk Hike Portugal and we have been dreaming ever since of accompanying them in the Azores. This post from RoarLoud on their visit to the Azores sold us on making sure this is a place we make it to in 2017.

The land of island-hopping, ancient history, and sunshine year-round. We are desperate to take a week-long trip to Greece to visit Athens, Santorini, and Meteora. I love this guide from Two Blue Passport’s on Santorini. And since we love hiking I couldn’t resist drooling over Great Big Globe’s guide to hiking in Santorini

Sailing Croatia

Dubrovnik is every bit as impressive as we hoped!

A post shared by Mike& Mark (@theboysabroad) on

If you follow our adventures you know that I like to pretend I’m an amazing hiker. So, when I stumbled across The Boys Abroad Sail Croatia review I started researching the different experiences Sail Croatia hosted. Lo and behold – They have a sailing + hiking trip! This is high up on our “must-dos” for next year.

Long-Haul Trip

I’m on a mission to explore as much of Europe as possible. But, the hubs lived in Japan when he was a kid and he won’t stop talking about it. He suggested I start reading blogs on Japan and sure enough I’m in love. Out of the fifty or so I’ve read in the past month Travel with a Nob’s post on the Hitachi Seaside Park is my favorite. We’ll see what happens next year, but if we can afford a long-haul Japan is at the top of the list!

Happy Trekking!

  • Thanks for including us in your bucket list- the Azores won’t disappoint! Let us know if you want any tips once you plan a trip:)

    • Danielle from Boots not Roots

Thank you! 😀 We’ll see if we can fit it in next year, but it’s very very high on the list for our fall trip.

  • Alhambra and the Azores are both high up on my bucket list – we are visiting Portugal and Spain next year so will definitely visit. If you haven’t visited Hong Kong yet you should stop there on your way to Japan!

    • Danielle from Boots not Roots

Ah, good idea! If we make it to Japan I imagine we’ll do a 2-week trip so we could probably pop over to Hong Kong. 🙂

  • Rachel In Ireland

See you at TBEX Killarney! xxx

    • Danielle from Boots not Roots

      Yay!!! 😀

  • David Johnston

Great list and inspired me to think about mine too. Would love to visit a lot of the places on your list, particularly Ireland, Japan and the Azores. Cinque Terre really lives up to the hype, it’s so picturesque. Make sure to organise tickets for the Alhambra in advance as it can book out at certain times. Will let you know if I make a list of my own 🙂 #WeekendWanderlust

    • Danielle from Boots not Roots

David – Highly highly suggest Ireland. I might be a little biased living here, but we absolutely love it! Thank you for the tips on Cinque Terre and Alhambra. 🙂 Let me know if you make a list! Would love to check it out!

  • Jacky

Oh wow, some great destinations on your list 🙂
I think it’s time Mihir and I sit down and make a bucket list ourselves! Yours has certainly inspired us.

    • Danielle from Boots not Roots

Yay I’m so glad Jacky! There are so many places on our list and I needed to narrow it down a bit to actually start planning. We won’t get to all of the places on the list obviously, but it’s nice to have it narrowed down. 😀

  • Aw, thanks for the mention!
If you’re ever in Berlin, let me know! xxx

    • Danielle from Boots not Roots

      Will do Olga!

  • Jill

It’s nice to know I’m not the only abnormal one lol! I have trips planned years in advance – at least in my mind. We have our big trip for 2017 planned – we are visiting our daughter in Korea. But already in the works is a trip to Ireland for 2018. Hope you make it to all the destinations you would like to!

    • Danielle from Boots not Roots

If you make it to Ireland Jill let me know! 🙂 I’ve been collecting all kinds of tidbits on this beautiful country over the year. By the time 2018 rolls around maybe I’ll be an expert. 😉 Have so much fun in Korea!

  • Awesome list! I hope to be in Killarney too for TBEX! And we’re going to Japan in January. So there’s two that are the same on our list! I’d love to Sail Croatia too!

    • Danielle from Boots not Roots

I just purchased my tickets to TBEX! Hope to see you there! I’ll also watch your blog for Japan stuff. I’m super intrigued by it at this point. We’ll have to see if the budget allows for next year or not. 🙂

  • Sail Croatia is incredible! Definitely worth every cent 🙂
I love that you’re an avid planner too, I’m also planning out our trips for next year! It means that you can get great deals and have something to look forward to.
I’m sure you already know, but Sail Croatia have a discount at the moment if you book for next year already!

  • Different Shores

Hello Boots I only just saw this because for some reason the notification went into my spam! A lovely list: the Cinque Terre is one of my most favourite regions in the entire world. Sligo is one that I really want to get to soon: I’m in Ireland but there are so many parts I haven’t seen; I didn’t know there was a burgeoning food scene happening there. I went to Granada and Cordoba one January a few years ago and absolutely loved it as a winter break: brilliant blue skies, sunshine but gorgeously freezing (in good way). The tapas were amazing there and the winter sunsets over the Alhambra were pinky/purply loveliness .

  • I absolutely love this style of post and how you used other bloggers’ insta posts…I might steal this idea if that’s okay?? (Give you credit, obvs)… Also I can vouch for Cornwall SO HARD. I literally moved to the city I’m currently in because of its proximity to Cornwall. If you want any advice let me know, and hit me up when you’re visiting maybe we can do a lil southwest england blogger meet up!!!

  • hilary

How did I miss this awesome post?! A great list of ideas and posts! Thank you for including me, and should you make it to Granada I guarantee you will not be disappointed! We also LOVED Japan, and are hoping to make it back there in the next year or two… Happy Traveling!
